Ground response, construction sequence and the built environment
Geotechnical engineering for tunnels and underground infrastructure
Successful tunneling depends on understanding the ground, the excavation method and the response of nearby structures as one connected system. Klar Israel provides geotechnical analysis and design support for complex underground transportation and infrastructure projects.

The geotechnical challenge in tunneling
Underground excavation redistributes stress and generates movement in the surrounding soil or rock. The design must therefore consider not only the tunnel lining and excavation support, but also buildings, foundations, roads, railways, utilities and pipelines within the zone of influence.
The geotechnical model, excavation method, support sequence and expected response of the built environment must be developed together. Where the problem requires it, we use advanced analytical and numerical methods, including three-dimensional models, to evaluate the interaction between the ground, the tunnel and adjacent structures. Klar Israel has developed one of Israel's leading capabilities in this field.
Core areas of work
- Develop the geotechnical model from soil and rock investigations
- Select analysis parameters and test sensitivity to uncertainty
- Predict ground movement and assess effects on existing assets
- Analyze soil-structure interaction and staged construction
- Coordinate with tunnel, structural, railway and utility designers
- Cross-check advanced models against independent methods and experience
Tunnels, metro systems and railways
Klar Israel advises on metro, railway, highway and other underground infrastructure projects. Our experience allows us to examine both local details and system-wide behavior, with the depth of analysis matched to the decisions, risks and sensitivity of the surrounding environment.
Effects of underground works
We also assess the effects of horizontal directional drilling and other underground works on pipelines, roads and railway tracks. These studies require careful definition of stress paths, ground and structural properties, separation distances, construction stages and project-specific performance limits.
Engineering control of advanced models
A numerical model can reveal behavior that simplified calculations cannot, but the result remains dependent on the data, constitutive model, parameters and boundary conditions. We combine advanced analysis with sensitivity studies, independent checks and lessons drawn from comparable projects.
